When does Asr start?
Asr starts when an object’s shadow equals its length plus its shadow at noon (Shafi‘i, Maliki, Hanbali and Jafari schools), or twice its length plus the noon shadow (Hanafi school).
When does Asr end?
Asr ends at sunset. Delaying it until the sun turns yellow is disliked (makruh).
How many rak‘ahs is Asr?
4 fard rak‘ahs. Sunnah prayers before it are recommended; how many differs by school.
Where the schools differ
This shadow rule is why the Hanafi Asr time is later than the Asr time of the other schools.
Hanafi Asr begins when an object’s shadow is twice its length. Shafi‘i, Maliki, Hanbali and Jafria Asr begins when the shadow equals its length. Jafria uses the Jafari method (Leva Institute, Qum), and the Tehran method in Iran.
