Why is Asr time different for Hanafi and Shafi‘i?
Hanafi Asr begins when an object’s shadow is twice its length. Shafi‘i, Maliki, Hanbali and Jafria Asr begins when the shadow equals its length. Jafria uses the Jafari method (Leva Institute, Qum), and the Tehran method in Iran.
How are prayer times set in the midnight sun and the light summer nights?
On Arctic days when the sun does not set or rise, or the day is too short for every prayer, SalaahDaily uses the times of the nearest latitude where all five prayers have their place, following the Muslim World League’s Fiqh Council. When twilight lasts all night in summer, Fajr and Isha are estimated from the night. The European Council for Fatwa and Research permits combining Maghrib and Isha in summer when there is real hardship. Some mosques, for example in Tromsø, follow Makkah’s times instead.
